Calf implants
The surgery is indicated for patients who have deformities or calf muscles hypoplasia and in some cases, when there is a pronounced difference between the circumferences of the legs. The asymmetry can be caused by infectious diseases, nerve damage immobilization of the limb or hereditary features.
It is possible to augment not only the posterior surface, but also the lateral-posterior surface of the calf. The procedure can be performed only on the upper and middle third of the calf. The operation is made with intravenous anesthesia while the patient is lying on his stomach. The incision is made in the popliteal envelope (3-4 cm). The implant is installed under the muscular fascia, then the wound closes in layers, usually without drainage. Compressive dressing and movement restraint for several days are mandatory.
One of the particularities of the operation is the possible contouring of the prosthesis on skinny patients. In the first few weeks after surgery, slight pain is possible while walking. According to the data inflammation (which requires implant removal) occurs in 1% of surgeries.
In the immediate postoperative period it is obligatory to limit the movements and wear compression linen. Pain in the first few days can occur during walking and different kinds of physical activities. There may be a pronounced edema. Improvement can be achieved by resting with lifted legs and pain relievers. The bad feelings gradually disappear. This requires a period of 8 to 12 weeks.
